Card #32
Saul
Featuring Saul
The Story
Saul began as a tall, impressive young man who seemed like the perfect first king for Israel, and at first he showed humility and courage. Samuel anointed him, and the people shouted with joy when he was presented before them. But Saul's heart slowly turned from obedience to self-will. He offered sacrifice when he should have waited for Samuel, and later he spared what God had told him to destroy. When David won victories and the people began to sing his praises, jealousy took root in Saul's heart. Again and again he tried to hold on to the kingdom by force, but the Lord had chosen another. Saul's tragic end on the battlefield shows that outward strength cannot replace a heart that truly listens to God.
Moral of the Story
Obedience to God is essential for good leadership, and disobedience can lead to losing God's favor.
