Card #29
Phinehas and Hophni
Featuring Phinehas and Hophni
The Story
Hophni and Phinehas were sons of Eli, but instead of honoring the Lord as priests, they treated holy things with contempt. They grabbed the best meat from the sacrifices before it was properly offered, ignoring the commands God had given. Their selfish actions made worship bitter for the people, and their behavior spread dishonor through the tabernacle. A man of God warned Eli that judgment was coming on his house because of their corruption. Later, when Israel went to battle, Hophni and Phinehas carried the ark into camp as if it were a lucky object instead of a sign of God's holy presence. The battle ended in disaster, both brothers died, and the ark was captured. Their story is a serious warning that religious position means nothing if the heart is hard and disobedient.
Moral of the Story
We must honor and respect God in everything we do, as disobedience can lead to serious consequences.
